welding on truck bed

I'm going to weld a 1/2 ton cherry picker to the back of my mason dump. Other than disconnecting the battery and keeping the ground close to the action is there anything I should look out for.

Thanks Steve

Make sure your gas tank is as shielded as it can be and that there are no fumes leaking out.

Cover your tires and any glass that may be close enough to catch spatter. They will both get pocked by the spatter.

I picked up a crane similar to that for $50.00 at a tool sale and mounted it in the back corner of my pickup. It is supposedly rated for 1000 lbs but I think that is optimistic But it will lift a section of stone easily and it lifts the packer in and out of the truck. It will also lift a 24" B&B tree. My back says it is the best 50 bucks I have spent and best of all it only needs 1 person to go pick things up instead of 2 of us.

Looks great- I see it's removable by pulling the pin on the base- where do you store it, and how heavy is it to get in and out of the pocket? Oh- and how tall is that from the ground- just in case you forget to take it out before running down the road?

Its 9' 6'' tall and ive got it latched to the side so its no problem on the road. I'll see how much use it gets but i'll probably just leave it in all the time.
