Nice job.

You've covered a lot of bases with that one.

More companies should upgrade to that kind of equipment.

...but you need class A to drive any truck/trailer combination where the combined RATINGS (not actual weight) of the two exceeds 26K, as long as the trailer is RATED at least 10K. I have Isuzus rated at around 17K by manufacturer (DOT says according to "HIGHER of manufacturers' or actual weight") pulling a 10K trailer for Bobcat, whether both are empty or full, therefore, drivers must have a Class A, not B.....So maybe a Class B driver could drive that unit by itself but he couldn't drive most of my other vehicles the rest of the time. Why not just get an Class A and get it over with.

Thanks mdvaden,

We will also be adding a seed injection system so we can "terraseed". Cant wait!

johnkeegan:

You only need a class A if you are over 26k gvw + a 10k+gvw trailer per our DMV.org page for MD. Here is the cut:

Class A: Any combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GWVR) of 26,001 or more pounds, provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

Class B: Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.

So, I would only need an A for this if I were to carry a heavy skid trailer around empty or full. Even if it is a hook I wouldnt plan on that.

With our NQR, or NPR we could carry a 10k+ gvw trailer and still only need a Class B CDL.

The CDL A is more stringent, cost more money, and requires closer medical exams etc.

If you have the Isuzus rated at 14,500 or whatever you are OK for a B.
However, not to nitpick but your first sentence "You only need a class A if you are over 26k gvw + a 10k+gvw trailer .."
I think you mean "including" (not +) a 10K+ trailer." Some might mistake that to mean that only if the truck is over 26K AND the trailer is over 10k+ do you need a Class A. As your DMV quote says, it's the combined weight of both that matters.
I also did not realize that there was any difference in the medical exams for a B or A. You may want to check they haven't tightened that in the last year or two.

No problem, maybe I am reading it wrong as I did mean as I typed as the truck being 26k and a 10k+ gvw trailer. I believe this cert is mainly for tractor trailers.

So if you have a 80kgvw dump truck, you only need a class b cdl.

If you put a 20k trailer or for this sake lets say a 11k gvw trailer, you will need that class A.

So, if you have a 26k vehicle you can put on a 9,999 gvw trailer (10k) and be fine.

If you have a 26k vehicle with a 10,001 gvw trailer you need a class A

A 18k gvw truck with a 9k gvw trailer you need cdl class a

...you've got to wonder who the brainchild was that concocted these rules. They actually encourage people to tow with lighter duty trucks.
