Manually Priming Fuel System

Our GMC 7500 has a Cat in it which, according to the documentation, has a manual fuel primer pump that can be used to recharge the fuel system after filter changes or when someone forgets how to read a fuel gauge. The manual is pretty vague and there are no pictures, so does anyone have any experience using one?

What everyone is telling me is the actual pump, doesn't pump in any way and looks an awful lot like something I'd connect a pump to.

Thanks.
