As per my earlier post, we did get the stump out and I hand excavated those soft spots and it worked out well. I put all the possible options on the table, and the hardest one ended up (of course!) being the right one.
Go back, fix by hand, cover it back up. I feel better about that.
As for the saw, a small tools mechanic showed me what was going on last night. The nut up top had to be slid further down the shaft, which he did by cupping a socket over top and tapping it down with a mallet. It was on quite tight, which made doing this difficult. Jeff, as you suggested, he installed a small metal sleeve on the knockout; normally there's a pre-tapped knockout, but this blade didn't have it.
So all's well in my universe, for now.
