Slit Seeders

Anyone own one? Have you found one better than another? I have used Lesco's in the past but they stopped renting them. The local rental places rent these crappy Blue Birds. Its time to buy one!

Stonehenge is on a distinguished road
I've used those Blue Birds, and have to agree. I believe Ryan is the company that makes a really nice one - lot's of bells and whistles (though a couple of the bells wouldn't ring when I used it). If budget weren't an issue, I'd get a Ryan.

The choices that I have used are Lesco renovator, Ryan Mattaway or aerovator

Tese are all hands and feet above the the bluebitds. The Lesco unit si a bit more stable and I think easier to use then the mattaway -- especially on nay property with any hills.

My peronal faborite is to go over the yard with an aerovator.
The Aera-Vator is a 40", 60", or 80" aeration device that attaches to the PTO of a 3 cylinder tractor or they have a model that attaches to the Grass Hopper mowers, and a Dingo model. The Aera-Vator has solid tines that are attached at an angle, they are "vibrated" into the soil causing even the hardest grounds to break open.

The process I use involves applying half of the desired seed prior to running the Aera-Vator, then after apply the other half of the seed, the fertilizers, and lime if needed. The results are great, no patterns like you get with aeration or cornrows like with the Mattaway

The Aera-Vator is best on thin lawns or renovations but can be used for any lawn in place of aeration. One big bonus, when it is dry and other companies are unable to aerate due to hard ground, we continue on business as usual.

I have used or sold all the models. The only 3 I would consider are the Ryan Mataway, of which I currently own and use, the aeravator set up with the seed hopper and brushes, and the Toro/Olathe which was a great unit, but is not made any more to my knowledge.

The Ryan is good for it's size, we use it on smaller lawns and athletic fields.

For overall efficency and results, those Aeravator units are the best. Fast, they fracuture the soil, drop the seed and the brushes move the seed into the soil / holes and cover it. I had a 60 inch rented for a few months some years ago when we were doing some golf course renovations. The club ended up buying the unit after we were done.

I have a Lesco Renovator. It is a good machine and alot easier to use than the Bluebird. You can find some used ones on Ebay.
