It is real. It is called a biofuel and in Toronto the Hydro Commision uses this fuel (in a much larger way)

http://www.freedomfuelamerica.com/

There was a segment on Trucks on Spike TV all about it

The only thng that scares me about home made biodiesel is what it could potentially do to the injectors and injection pump. Face it, the only reason I would ever convert is to save money. No road taxes, no pump price, make the fuel and go. Said that, an injection pump is a bare minimum $1,000.00 item, and injectors can run 470.00 each. So, when your homemmade fuel clogs the crap out of the injectors and wears out the injection pump prematurley, how much money did you really save?

That would be my concern too. I am sure that the Toronto Hydro Commission isn't using a make it a home device and there are a lot of testing and purifying steps. You can always use home heating oil if you want to beat the tax man but it isn't as clean as proper diesel fuel. In Canada you can get coloured fuel that dosn't have road tax applied for use in non road equipment but if you ever get caught with it in a truck you are toast. (they do check!)

Im a specialist in this field.
You need to pick up a copy of " From The Fryer to the Fuel Tank" Written by Joshua Tickell. It goes through the devopment of the diesel engine to how we can make the diesel engine preform FOR WHAT IT WAS MADE FOR! Multiple fules. Mr. Diesel happend to be murdered for his development of a muti fuel burning engine.
Oh btw bio diesel is CLEANER than #2 diesel.
Look up greasecar.com on the web.
I dont make it but I buy it for my zuzu cab over.

There is a local restaurant owner in the town that I live who has been running his french fry grase in an f250 for ten years. Multiple stories have been written about him in the paper over the years. He's never said anything about needing to replace an injector pump. Three years ago I replaced the injector pump and 8 injectors. $2900

If I understand this right a regular diesel will run on biodiesel without any modification to the engine but you must convert the used vegetable oil into biodiesel fuel.

Or you can run the engine with straight unprocessed vegetable oil but the oil needs to be heated to about 160 degrees so that the viscosity is correct for the engine.

My next question could this used oil be used in your home heating furnace the same way that diesel fuel can be?

Yes for the home heating situation. They probably can use spent engine oil too. I know of many a shop heater using used oil. I wouldnt use bio diesel for that though becoase the transferication process is for viscosity reasons. SVO would probably work if it isnt stored in a cool place, otherwise you would need to pre heat it.

There is a lot of discussion on this topic on www.tdr1.com. This website is for Dodge/Cummins owners. Here is a good thread from the site:

http://tdr1.com/forums/showthread.ph...ight=biodiesel

I found this site as well, you can find many more by running a google search:

http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/groupee/forums

The problem from what I gather is with the fuel filter the bio loosens up deposits in your tank and plugs your fuel filter. I also read that it may actually help lubricate your pump better. I run additive in my truck to help my fuel pump as it is running a lot more fuel than stock. I am no expert, but there is a lot of info out there. Just trying to point you in the right direction.
