I'm trying to diagnose and possibly repair a problem I've got on a lift gate for one of our trucks. The gate uses a hydraulic ram with pulleys and a cable to lift the gate.
When the gate is almost in the top position (ram close to fully extended) a gush of hydro fluid comes out. To the naked eye the ram appears straight, so I'm wondering what I need to check to see if this thing should be scrapped or if it can be repaired.
It could be that the ram is bent, but another possibility is the internal seal on the piston could be leaking. If this is a single acting cylinder, oil could be getting past the internal seal and then get forced out at the end of the stroke.
It probably could be fixed, but most of these cylinders are throw away these days, it would cost more to repair than replace.
