buying from rental shop

What's your opinion about buying equipment from a rental shop? I was at one today and they had a decent looking gas masonry saw at a fair price but I'm hesitant to buy it. The owner told me it's about 4 years old and I can get it for around $600. I normally don't even buy used stuff but this one is tempting me.

Depends how much you use it. I have bought stuff before from a rental co. Back when we only did a couple of patios and walkways per year I bought a used compactor and it worked fine for a few years until we needed something more reliable and were using it more regularly. If it's a backup or not used to much or in great shape I say go for it. I was looking into a used mini-ex from a rental company but decided to go new.

I bought my brown bed edger froma rental shop -- great price and have nev3er ahd a problem with it --

Some things that are simple mechanical things that rentors can't hurt are fine. In many ways -- I find the servie doen at rental shops is superior to almost anywhere else -- they jsut get alot of use/abuse.

With the saw, check the pivot points to see if it isn't all sloppy, and if the engine blows, you grab a boxed up GX-200, or 250 for $300.00, and you are still 2,000.00 under what a new one runs.

Now with compaction equipment, breaker hammers, and self destruct items, you are playing Russian roulette because they do work hard, and when they go down, it's serious coin to fix what broke, only to prolong something else from breaking that costs big bucks.

With excavators for example, there is a rental store that retires it's units at 2500 hours. Most mini X's can run 6000 hours with little to no trouble, so, there are alot of billable hours left in the machine.

My opinion would be that any equipment you may purchaseused from a rental company would be a great buy considering how they keep there equipment maintained so they can be rented again...Perhaps you can ask for a 30 day garantee...Never hurts to ask....Good Luck...Oh Yeah, Do You need a blade? I know a guy...Ha
