I had to decide between a dump insert or a dump trailer last year. I went with the trailer, but mainly because I also plow and opted for a bed salter rather than having to go with an undertailgate spreader for a dump box.

Del Equipment (here in Ontario) offered a dump insert for around $3500 with the high sides, tarp, and mesh behind the rear window. I also took a hard look at TruckCraft's aluminum model. Very nice but also very pricey, especially with a salt spreader attachment. My dump trailer doubles as an equipment float for me. Cost $7,000CDN and carries 12,000#.

looked at truck craft but they were very expensive. 5000 range for the aluminum. ez dump for the steel is only 2000 bucks

You can get a decent 12' dump trailer for the 5K range, ideally I think that is the best to go with. However, when you are in tight areas, need to back up through muck and murmer, a trailer will stick your truck.

Dump inserts won't carry as much, and I think you are almost better off running a dedicated dump truck.
