Price of steel and trailers..

One quick question that has to be asked.....

I've been pricing out another dump trailer this year and am about ready to buy one.

For the exact model I want, I got a price of 7k at the beginning of the year.......

Last week, I went for a quote again, and this time the price was 8k.....

Ok, so the price of steel is up, fuel is up, china is buying everything, and everthing else is going to Iraq to rebuild, blah, blah, blah..............

so here's my question......

If the price of a trailer, which is all steel, goes up 1k in less than a year (and by the way, to make things more interesting, inventory trailers that were sitting in the yard before the increase have also been tacked on the surcharge.......) ..........why is it the price of a automobile, any automobile.....which I would think uses a pretty decent amount of steel..........not gone up????

Anyone,......anyone.........

to be honest........if I can buy a trailer today and sell it for 1k more in less than a year.......that may be a very good investment oppurtunity...........hek with the stock market, hek with gold.....I'm buying trailers!

Seasonal price increase? Supply and demand?

Supply and the power of buying in mass. Similar to group health care vs an individual policy. More quantity commands lower prices. Imagine if detroit told the chinese forget it, we will mill our own steel once again , which they well could. th4e chinese are smart enough to realize that would make a big dent in thier economy. We have all thjose abandonded mills on the south side of chicago and through Gary and Hammond indiana, all we need to do is fire them up....

Not too much steel in cars these days, is there?
If my bumper were made of steel, I woulnd't have had to replace it 3 times since '00....why do they call 'em bumpers if you can't bump with 'em?

I'm pretty sure there are contracts that the automakers have with steel suppliers which means their price would be locked for the period of the contract. They also buy ahead in huge quantities.

Anyway, now that you've made them aware of the increase you're expecting, we'll all probably be paying higher prices soon!

spiderly......i think the engineers have found a solution to your problem......they just don't put bumpers on anymore. Its amazing how they are becoming a thing of the past. Every year, more and more cars are designed without. I would really like to meet the people in charge of that.

and pelican, you're probably right.....I'm gonna shut up from now on and not raise anymore suspician. spikes for edging are already costing enough. I don't want to walk into my supplier next week and pay $200 for a 50lb box of spikes!

I priced 72 " high no-climb field fence 2 months ago and it was $1.96 per foot when I ordered it last week it had jumped to $2.15 per foot. Last year the 48" tall no climb was .96¢ per foot. This is definitely not a good thing. On the other hand now is a good time to gather up all that old scrap metal and cash it in.
