Dynascape Interfacing With New Computer System

Hello....

I am looking at upgrading to a new computer with Vista as the Operating System. Even saying the name makes my tummy sick. I have experience all the glitches before when a newer system comes out. Dang!

Does anyone use Dynascape, and if so, are you using VISTA SUCCESSFULLY with this software? I am just wanting to anticipate any issues that might happen...and yes, I may have to upgrade the Dynascape also (I think I am running 3.0 still).

Will cost me a bundle, so would love to hear some feedback!

Are the new Dynascape upgrades worth the peanuts?

Thank You

I am running it with Vista 64 bit. Have gotten a number of bugs, but overall it runs OK.

Bugs:

Dynascape PDF writer crashes my system.

Can't save drawings as jpegs or any file type except DPD, unless I use the cutepdf writer to save as PDF. Crashes otherwise.

Can't print from drawing, must save as PDF then print. Printing causes crash.

No "help" or search from within the program.

I occasionally have an error where I will "undo" something and it will undo something I did ages ago rather than the thing I just did. Had one irritating couple weeks in particular with that problem (it was super awesome to have it keep eating my home and bed lines instead of what I'd asked it to undo); now it only happens occasionally, so I just watch when I undo something and make sure it undid the right thing. If that bug begins, just save and restart and it often solves the issue for a while.

Had a few other weird bugs on various drawings and importing into DS color - don't cluster any of the fern shapes till the next update - just a tip! They said they are fixing that bug.

Having trouble interfacing with word and excel with quote, too.

Mostly it runs OK, these are just a few small irritating things, but there are work-arounds for most of it, so it needn't keep you from upgrading.

They aren't currently planning on making it work with 64-bit, so if you upgrade your comp, I'd keep it 32-bit and maybe you'll avoid some of the worst of the bugs.

Many of my clients find the color upgrade worthwhile - it helps them when they are maintaining things to see that the Rhododendron is the one that had the yellow flowers, and that it's next to the Salvia with purple flowers. Cuts down on my trips out to the jobsite afterwards to deal with stupid stuff - if I can troubleshoot small plant issues or advise on fertilizing via email or the phone, which this helps with, then my bottom line is much better off.

Are you sure you need vista? I upgraded and found a comp with 2 gigs of ram and the newest processor (intel core duo processor or whatever its called) that happend to have XP on it. I still run the old Dynascape 3.0 without the upgrades.

Hi there and thank you! My "job" this Winter is to get my computer upgraded in all the ways I need it to be....I will take a closer look at what you have experienced in making my decision. I remember when I changed from 2000 to XP what problems I had. Stopped my work for quite a long time getting all these bugs out. Was a nightmare!

Thanks

I am so glad to hear that I am not the only basic system hold out out there!

I feel that if I do upgrade to Vista that I will then have to upgrade to a more complex system also in Dynascape ($$$).

Do you feel that you had to pay more to get XP installed rather than Vista?

Thank you,

does dynascape run on a Mac? If so, your decision should be obvious.

I needed a lap top because I needed to be more mobile with my office work. I didn't want to spend a lot, I just wanted the mobility. I found a lap top that was much better then the desk top I have used for years. It had XP on it already. The transition was totally painless. The only bugs I have are he same old Dynascape bugs like Gensparkie wrote about. I have those type of issues with Dynascape anyway.

All of my comp nerd friends still say stay away from Vista. The Mac is looking better and better to me for my next upgrade. That will be awhile hopefully, my lap top is great.

Hey Mac

I am totally not familiar with the MAC system.

How is it different than using a PC?

Would it tend to not have as many bugs and issues? Are upgrades more painless???

Thanks for the feedback!

without getting too technical, a mac is just so amazingly intuitive. Ive had mine almost 2 years and it has yet to crash, used on a daily basis. As I understand it, there are less viruses to deal with. Finally, their applications are pretty sweet. Did I mention the short cuts? you almost dont need a mouse. check one out for yourself - its a neat change.

Mac,

thank you... i will bop into my local Mac store and check it out. I tell you, I have had a history of heartache with my computer....so many years of crashing, things not working correctly, many many software purchases.....so so tired of the darn thing!

I've been using Pro Landscape for a couple months and have done several plans and am working on editing the plant database. I love it! I highly recommend it if you decide not to upgrade, or if you have to learn a new program anyway.
