Online portfolios

I have a website with my portfolio like I'm sure most of you do, but I just found a cool web app that allows you to create a separate online portfolio.

It's called Carbonmade.com. Do any of you use this? If so, let me know how you are using it.

It took me about an hour to sign up for a free account and load some project pictures. It was very easy.

Check out my Carbonmade portfolio if you'd like-

I used something similar for mine, Flash Nifties - Flash image galleries, slideshows, guestbook and more Like most other elements of my website, I haven't used it to its full potential- but it was crazy easy to implement.

The problem with carbonmade is that it doesn't have a category for landscape design. Plus there is a limit on the number of projects you can have without them wanting money out of you. I know a few interior designers who use it.

I keep mine on landscapedia.info. It's free and doesn't have ads on the portfolio part. Plus it takes the information from my the projects I already created on there.

The reason I like Carbonmade is because it is completely painless to use. It's very simple and straightforward. And it's ONLY for portfolios.

I checked out Landscapedia.com as well. It looks like it has potential. It just seems to be much more than on online porfolio builder.

What *IS* landscapedia actually trying to be? I got a little overwhelmed.

Michael,

Nice job with Landscapedia.com by the way. It looks like a good plant info resource for designers.

I saw your write up in APLD's The Designer as well.

Are you at the conference this week?

Thanks

Chris,

I didn't make the conference this year. I'm hoping to make it next year. Did you make it? I'm on the MPR Committee, so I'm really hoping next year I can swing the trip.

Carbonmade is convenient. I know a few people who use it because they don't want to do their own website. Personally, I think if you are going to pay money, then just pony up for a full website.

papercutter,

I'm a little reluctant to discuss Landscapedia too much here. I don't want to take away from this site. Site owners get upset if they think you are trying to steal their members which I'm not at all. I will say this in direct response to your question. It's whatever people ask me to work on, which is why it's become a very deep site within a year and a half. If you have any direct comments, please feel free to tell me off line.

It looks good.

Looks basically like a slideshow.

An add-free image host slideshow could do the same thing too. I'm all for the idea, whether flash or static. Personally, I like non-flash and am hearing more and more from people all the time how they prefer stuff that is not flash looking.

But it's still fine and can look very good.

I think if design is your main niche, then the portfolio thing is good to put right out in front.
