Clinometers?

I do a fair bit of stuff attached to the house (porches, decks, porticos) and I don't always trust measuring what I can reach and counting bricks for the rest. Does anyone have any experience with clinometers? How accurate are they (assuming my math is correct)? How delicately do they need to be treated?

Thanks!

You might want to look at one of those laser measuring devices. I know one by Leica will give yu a length if you shoot perpendicular and level to a flat building face, then shoot the two ends (or top and bottom).

I'm not sure if my $100 stanley can do that or not. I have not checked.

That's something we'll look into. I just was looking at the Ben Meadows catalog and they have a lot of stuff geared towards finding out the heights of trees; didn't know just how precise they were. Their clinometers are in the $100-160 range, so I figured if I could get about 6" +/- I'd be ok with that.
