Fence Gate Design
What is the school of thought on fence gate design?
Should it mirror the fence, or is it an opportunity to get a little more artistic? I know Diginahole posted some pics and the fence gat was more ornate than the rest of the fence, and looked very nice.
The fence I'm designing is very simple in design, and is intended to have vines over it, but the gate won't have the chance for green cover.

Here's the concept for the fence - 2"x2" grid with 12" spacing, with some farm wire between.

My own feeling is that the gate should follow the basic design of the fence but be slightly more ornate so that it is distinctive, inviting and easy to find. If it looks to much like the rest of the fence, it gets lost.

The gate will also need more support so that it stands up to the stresses of use. Possibly, diagonal members will help keep it 'square' as well as heavier top and bottom rails. The rest can be filled to match the fence.

Here's another idea: http://www.finehouse.net/Garden%20Gates%202.htm
This is considerably more complicated but could be modified to utilize the grid on the top and a more solid lower portion.

It is my belief that the gate should be different for the same reasons given above. It needs to be built much stronger than the fence and it needs to stand out from the fence so as not to get lost.
Some nice ideas at that link Lanelle. I really like the scrolls on the fence sections adjacent to the gates and the heavier timbers for gate posts.

Good news!! We landed the contract. (actually, landing it wasn't really in question. Whether we did the fence was.) The fence will be attached to this arbor and serve to enclose an area for their small dog to run and play.
