Revised/Updated Website - welcome feedback

LawnLad - Landscaping Services

This is our first update to our website. We first went live about a year ago. The first site was more of a online brochure, less call to action and less consumer oriented.

Our goal with this revision was to play up on our services, laying out our packages and attempt to drive traffic to the MyYard page to submit information to begin the qualifying process for a prospect. We also beefed up the join the team page with an online application and more information about working for the company.

We still have to update testimonials, some of the pictures are place holders at the moment and will be udpated, and we're missing a few PDF's that still have to be added to round things out.

I welcome any feedback via this forum, through our site or by email (info@lawnlad.com). Thanks for taking the time and sharing any thoughts you have. I appreciate the input for industry professionals.

the very first place your landscape design/build clientele will go is a photo gallery or "portfolio" page. you will want to make sure that is prominent on the home page.

and there appears (at least in my browser) that there is alot of blank space in the middle of the home page, requiring scrolling down. you might want to tighten that up.

I'm not seeing any blank space in my versions of Firefox or Internet Explorer. It looks fine to me.

Looks like it could be a difference in how that browser renders the code. Can you post what browser versions you're seeing this problem with? It'll help LawnLad's web person fix the issue.

My $.02 on the site:

I like the really big flower graphic on the index page and in general, the big, rich graphics for each page are excellent (but the pic of the old folks has to go: LawnLad - Landscaping Services - the old guy looks like you told him he wasn't getting his oatmeal unless he posed for the photo).

There's something about the navigation that's confusing for me - you have a challenge in that there's a great deal of content on the site, and managing to make the navigation easy on a big site is one of the biggest challenges you'll face. That being said, on the index page, so much graphical space is given to the three options on the right that it appears that's all you do. The links in the head of the page seem to get lost relative to those big graphic links.

You've got a really nifty icon group to define the different kinds of services you provide, but I only get introduced to them together if I happen to click MyYARD. Those icons and the content each section covers seems important enough that a graphical link should appear somewhere prominent on the home page, not at an incidental location deeper in the site. (Side note on the icons - every time I look at the red turf icon I think it's a fire safety or fire suppression section - red with flames. Maybe a light green icon instead of red?)

Design services page - the bronze/silver/gold graphic does not line up with text below in Firefox 2.0.0.12 or IE7. Nitpicky, but still.

The ability to allow people to click a nice big icon to add a service to the list of things they want an estimate about is a neat feature. However, the MyYARD main page graphic header "Customized Care for your unique needs" somehow doesn't make it obvious what's supposed to happen on that page. Maybe something more descriptive with less promo language would better suit, like MyYARD: Select Your Services. Then in the text below, explain that a person is expected to select among the choices below and submit the information and a LawnLad rep will contact you by the next business day to schedule an appointment. Or whatever. I also think that having your phone number more prominently listed on every page, especially this page, would be beneficial. I don't know if you're trying to funnel your web visitors to this method instead of phone contact - my preference is phone contact, but you may feel differently. Also, making the phone number bigger will allow propective clients to call you right away instead of having to wait for a return call from your office.

You get points for the form submission - telling the visitor exactly what's happening, and after it's submitted, what's going to happen next.

Re: the tabs at the top of interior pages - you might want to rework those - for Firefox I have to click over a word before the tab will even begin to materialize, then again to get to where I want to go. Also, in both browsers the tab appears too slowly. Either make it immediate or near immediate. Effects are nice, but users shouldn't have to wait for navigation.

From an SEO perspective you might consider sprinkling more geospecific terms into your content. You may also want a site map to help search engine spiders to index all your content, especially since it looks like a lot of links are in javascript.

In general, you've got yourself a really nice site that's rich in content and heavy on the web2.0 side. Very nice.

One of the more content rich sites I have seen -- that takes a lot of work -- good work!

Thank you everyone thus far for your thoughtful questions and critiques. I've come to the determination that maintaining a website is literally a continuous process - something that you don't just do one time and move on, or even one time a year and move on. We're planning improvements now upon what exists - so we'll look to incorporate some of the suggestions.

We got to a point where we know there are some things that still need tweaking - but rather than looking to make it perfect out the door before posting we thought better to get it up and get using it and then make the tweaks in the coming weeks and months as they come up and as we discover issues.

I like it. I use firefox and the front page shows up fine. I like the service page where you can choose your program. I am not in the maintenance business so I wont comment on the content. Being in maintenance I dont think a portfolio page is that important, having the testimonials is.

Looks great nice work.

Absolutely - otherwise, you'd never get the site up, because there would always be something new to add or something to tweak.

Thanks to those who have visited and provided feedback. I thought the value of Google Analytics came through by looking at the following:

Since Sunday March 16th when the new site went live:
52 visits on the site from GTX - 74.08% new visitors (not been on site previously)
5.79 average pages per view (site avg 7.81) -25.93%
3:31 average time on site (site avg 5:20) - 34.09%

It is interesting to see the difference between those refered by GTX and those that come to the site through direct traffic or organically (search). It appears in just this past week alone that the average page views and time spent on the site have nearly doubled from our old site. More people too in the MyYard section which is where we want people to go to submit information.

As we begin our spring advertising push and post cards, door hangers and mailers go out, it will be interesting to see what happens. A tool like Google Analytics is awesome for seeing how the changes/updates you make are viewed and used by your site visitors.

I really like your site. You'll constantly play with it, but here's a quick vote of confidence in what you have in so far.
Great work!

I like it, as well. I liked the simple overview of the different levels of the maintenance program.

Basically, I like it.

Just off the top of my head, the people are missing their heads on the home page - pun intended. But seriously, I prefer to see the person't face.

On the sub-menu, I'd like something other than orange, but don't know which color to suggest.

Not sure if you have to have a photo gallery as much as just having some photos - which you do. There is no guarantee that people will go to a photo gallery first - that's hypothetical.

Visitors can equally pick a background or "about us" page first. They might pick the specials page first.

Site design and placement of links can even channel people to where you want them to go first.

For example, a home page could exclude any possible link, except one that goes to the "about us" and on the home page it would merely say "NEXT" with an arrow.

As it sits though, it looks clean and professional. Don't rush, take your time if you would like, with changes.
