Here is my take on the idea as to why landscape work slows down in the fall.......

Day light hours are shortening.
Kids returning to school

Peoples attention is no longer on that of Spring/Summer...outdoors...fun in the sun, etc.....

Their attention becomes more that of indoors

People sit around all winter thinking of what to do in the yard.....they act and react on impulse.....and they want things now while they are thinking of them........also they want to use it and experience it......as well as show it off.

How can people do that if they are doing a major install in October?...........people want to flaunt their stuff.

Easier to do a $5k, $10, or even $50k landscape install in May than to do it in October.

Also people sit around all winter thinking of what they want to do outside and or in the landscape.....whether or not to travel for summer vacation or install that pool they wanted......they get worked up comes spring and they all want it "NOW"

Comes the end of the summer......people are pooped......they've done all the party and BBQ stops..........so late summer and early fall kinda becomes that vacation you need from your vacation.

Then what happens........Holidays are right around the corner.

Majority of the public stops thinking about landscaping some time in August.

That's been my experience anyway

In my area i tend to see a big slow down in calls around june 20th when the kids get out of school. It seems to be real slow until after the labor day. Alot of people do not want their properties tore up all summer if its a bigger project.

To the original poster- I recommened teaming up with landscape contractors if you are looking for a 10-40k jobs. These are not big jobs. I do not see clients looking for a designer for projects that size.
