angry This Week's Frequently Asked Question.. DO YOU CHARGE FOR AN ESTIMATE?

Do you know how sick of hearing that I am?

I swear every other phone call or email, the first thing they ask is "do you charge for an estimate?"

When I say "no, but I charge for a design or consultation" some of them then try to get me to come out there and weasel a consultation out of me anyway.

Yesterday I had an appointment that was a complete and total waste of time, eventhough I thought I qualified this broad ahead of time. Her first question out of the chute was "do you charge for an estimate"... I spoke with her at great length on the phone and she made it sound like she wanted a patio and landscaping...blah blah blah.

Well, the patio turned out to not be a patio at all, but instead, a dangled carrot... and the landscaping turned out to be replacing 5 - one gallon plants and touching up her mulch.

I gave her such a high price, she almost passed out right there and got all insulted that I wouldn't work for nothing.

The noive of sum peeple... grrrrr

LOL......

Yup........working for nothing. After all we just work with our hands not with our brains.........right?

I got something regarding working for nothing that might raise a few eye brows here.

Master bedroom in my home where my parents are. OK, ok.............yes I living with my parents.....I pay all the bills, repairs, improvements and so on. There is a story about this, but not necessary at this time.

Anyway. Master bedroom. Decided it needed to be painted and new carpet, but it is a very cold room. North side of the house. Took down old sheet rock on the outside walls, new insulation. Had a friend and neighbor do the rock and spackle.....6 long boards. I think 6. 1 wall 16' other 14'. Window each wall.

$950

Told the 2 brothers no wonder you never gave me a price ahead of time.........and I guess the numbers of 6-$700 this past December was just a tease.

Their reasoning was had I ripped out all 4 walls it would have been the same price. But just the 2 walls it was a small job......Well. I learned something from this.........will certainly apply it to my work.............most definitely will when I go to the one brothers house in Copiague to redo his front sod that he hired some shmuck localy that rototilled, never raked it out and came back 2 weeks later and installed the sod.
