All publicity is good publicity

Or is it......

One of the local municipalities recently wrapped up a large downtown / river renovation project that included a large pavillion, an arbor that stretched 200' or more, and pavers galore.

The centerpiece of this renovation is a fountain that sprays water up and out, lands on an area of pavers immediately around it and funnels back into a drain to be recycled.

Only something went wrong. The water sprays out, but there must have been some miscommunications or a poor installation; instead of funneling the water back to the drain, water just runs everywhere throughout the area. Soon after the dedication ceremony sandbags had to be placed around the area to prevent water from escaping. And just last saturday the story hit the papers. My guess is it'll require the removal and reprep of about 1,000 sqft of pavers, and with the new slopes they'll have to use, none of the seams will line up anymore.

I'm pretty sure there's such a thing as bad publicity, and there's a local company here having to suffer through it. I guess it's the possible price to be paid for taking on very high visibility projects.

I guess it can happen, we never had that kind of problem. I'm wondering who's problem is it? The paver installer might have followed grades set by others ( most public works projects have a surveyor, to set grades. Yes they do make mistakes. The plumber for the fountain might have installed the drains at the wrong elevation. Most likely set in concrete the paver installer had no place to really work to. And of course the paver installer might have just messed up.

I remember a public golf course that we installed a retaining wall at. The surveyor gave us the starting grade for the base and it seemed a bit off to me. So I pulled my laser out and re shot the foundation of the club house and found that he was 3' off! This was about a 2000' foot back shoot but it sure saved the day.

Hey it's construction! Thats why we call the construction plans given to us the "Funny Papers"! Along with the Construction Documents that you can use as T.P.

It could not be their fault whatsoever, and I relaize that (though there's a part of me that really wants it to be their fault ). Just something to consider for projects like these - they must have someone doing damage control 24/7 for this project, because everyone (and I mean everyone) in the area knows what company did the installation. That part has got to be really hard.
