tennis court

I'm bidding on low voltaltage for the rest of the property. But the customer asked to figure what it would take to light up his tennis court nicely. I'm subbing the linevoltage out--- I want to pick the lights and my distributor found some for me.
metal halide -1000watts ea.
comes with post(20ft) ,arm, and head.

I was thinking 6 would be like daylight, 4 might get it.
What do you guys think?

light it from the sides.......I'm thinking four each side......or 3 minimum........any less you may have dark areas. But that all depends on the customer.......if they realy want to play or just knock around at night...........realy want to play, more light.

I would have no idea how to figure out how much light is needed. That said, I'd probably give a call to a few clubs that have night tennis and ask about their lighting setups. I bet they'd be happy to tell you.

Almost any light manufacturer has photometric charts for each light, lamp type, post height, etc,... There is correct way to do this without guessing. I've had a little exposure to it, but I would hope those of you doing lighting design would know more about this than I do.

I've had to include these chrts in plans so that planning boards can pretend to know what they mean. They basically look like contour maps showing the intensity of light. As they overlap, you add them together.

Call your light manufacturer. They almost all have sales reps that want to help you in order to make a sale. I know someone working for a big lighting sales company. She told me that there has been a big slow down in demand in the last few months. I expect that you will have fast response if you make the calls. They will know how much light is required on a tennis court.

From what I see on a quick surfing mission. (6) 20' high poles with 1,000 watt bulbs is not overkill.

Just send the measurments of the court and a picture to the lighting manufacture and they will spec the proper fixtures, lamps, and placement. There are standards that need to be followed when lighting sport courts. You don't want somebody getting hurt because the lighting was not right.
