Underwater Lighting

Just wondering how you guys would light up a rill which runs water 15 metres to a pond. The lights would be submerged in water. Any thoughts?

I am not aware of any string lighting that submersible.

All under water lighting I have seen to date is.....individual units with it's own cord and plug.....that would need it's own GFI outlet.

I might be mistaken.

I would try lighting from above ground.....use the effect of reflection....that may work for you?

What are the dimensions of the rill, and what do you want to highlight with your lights?

You can get underwater, low voltage spot and flood lights that usually have a long enough wire to allow connection to your main lead on dry land.

And how cool is it for a Yankee to use the word "rill"?

Answer: very.

Words like that could really change the American experience.

Imagine if in Chris Farley's SNL sketch he said:
"I live in a Lorry down by the Rill"...

How different would our world be then???

As to the lighting question, though... I'd look at doing low-voltage fixtures as well. Although, I have seen some pond lighting kits that have 3 or 5 lights ("egglites") that may accomodate that kind of run.

I appreciate all your comments, and yes it would have to be low coltage for underwater. I have seen sets of 3 and 6 lights but they all seem to have say, 3 metres of cable each light attached to the transformer individually. What I need is 6 lights attached to each other in sequence over a 15 metre rill or stream...but so far it looks like I would have to have this made up specially....

Hmm.. That doesn't seem very user-friendly. What brands of lights are available to you locally?

If you have the time I'm sure we could find a supplier in the States that could get you what you need.

I agree its a tricky one that will need more research. I loved the idea of a 'rill' underlit all the way along. I will look into some sort of fibre otics for the future. For now I have left the lighting out.
Thanks for the input, most appreciated.

Aquascapes makes a puck-like watrfall light that emits 10 watts of light and is easily hid. Used some in a 25 foot stream with a gathering pond at the top and they look very nice. Understated, but enough light to give good accent. Low voltage and I just wire nutted them into a main line to the transformer. Had to look up what a "rill" was, I'm so sophisticated, huh!

Depending on how far the run is, and how bright you were looking to make the lights, there are many ways to get what you were looking for. Ideal- a company that makes connectors for commercial wiring has some great outdoor weather proof connectors so that you could string a series of lights together off of one transformer, or possibly two depending on the length of the run. You could then run your feed down along the feature you were looking to highlight, and attach them to the feed as a branch circuit in parallel. If you run across anything like this again, feel free to drop me a pm- I can try and whip up a drawgin illustrating what I mean.
