broken pipe at zone valve

service call ..... why would the pvb valve leak at the top bonnet when the feed line to one of the zone valve is broken right at the valve ( run over by tree trimmer in the lawn) . at the pvb with the feed line open from the house main and the feed to the zone valves off it doesn't leak at the top bonnet , turn on the 1/4 turn valve the feeds this broken zone valve and water blows out the top bonnet , why???

Continues to blow water out the top or just when you initially turn it on?

yes the water keeps flowing out from under the plastic top bonnet when the out going valve is opened ,turn off that valve and the water stops( feed line from house main is still on) . the only thing that I can see causing this is their is no back pressure or restricked flow being that the inline zone valve was broken off ?
