What to plant here? (pics inside)

Hello,

I recently installed a paver walk and patio at my home. Since I lined up the walkway with a gate I had, I'm left with a few of these small planting bays along the house/walk.

The width is 12-13". My wife and I are first time home owners and admittedly know zero about landscaping, plants, flowers, etc.. (though we want to learn).

Are there flowers we can plant here that will keep their flowers most of the year and grow back the following year? We're not too keen on having to re-plant every year but if its our best option, we'll have to go that route.

We were also recently contemplating planting dwarf boxwoods instead of flowers. We dont mind keeping them trimmed and neat in a globe shape as long as the roots wont interfere with the pavers.

I know its a small space but what are my best options? I am in northeast NJ just outside NYC.

Thanks so much!

Looks like you have less than a foot of space there and if your base was installed properly it's taking up half of it. You won't be able to plant boxwood there, maybe some annuals.

that looks like 6 inches to me, I agree some annuals or maybe lavender.
if it's 6" I would just put river stone.

Agree with the others. You might be able to get dwarf daylilies to work or liriope muscari.
Please don't do the boxwood.

If it's sunny and well drained, consider any of the colorful groundcover sedums (you'll get color from the foliage as well as blooms), or smaller dianthus species and/or Armeria. You could also check out the Stepable line at your local garden center

The space is 12-13" wide not 6". The width of the edge paver is 9".

Thanks for the suggestions thus far. If I cant do the dwarf boxwood, I suppose its back to plan A. To be honest, we'd prefer some color there but were just concerned about on-going maintenance.

as stated above I would plant liriope, it stays green all year and gets purple flowers. Very low maintenance as well.

Evergreen groundcovers. Sedums are good, Veronica georgia blue, is another. A selfseeding annual, i.e. cosmos, might also do well there. Color but doesn't have to be replanted each year. You don't say if it's sun or shade, or what type of soil, so that matters.

I wouldn't put anything there that required supplimental water. (Water against the foundation scares me. ) I'd also avoid things that spread, develop rhizomes that could push against the stones. Plants can be pretty invasive between stones and you don't want them growing between or under to heave the stones up.

They're from Grinnell. Berkshire Vintage, 5 piece random. Border is the Union which is the same style as the Berkshire but just 6x9 size. Color is Chestnut for both.

It's sealed with a matte finish sealer. Looks glossier in the pics than it really is. Without the sealer it didnt really look like the sample color. The grey looked blue and the brown looked grey. Looked better when they were damp, so I sealed it.
