Patio Landscaping

I just had my concrete patio extended 5 feet all around. The concrete contractors back filled it with black dirt. I am looking to maybe plant some flowers and bushes around it to spruce it up. Any one have any ideas? I've attached a picture.

Something for some shade! My eyes are burning looking at all the light colors.

As a very wise person once said on this site:
"Take your photo to your local independent garden center and have them fill in the plants for you -- and then buy the plants from them. Don't just use their knowledge then run to the nearest big box."

I would like to see the beds enlarged in a couple of areas to give more room to plant actual shrubs and maybe a tree. Right now, the bed is narrow and is like a necklace around the patio edge. And please follow the above advice.
Down the road a while, consider having a flagstone veneer put on the concrete so that you have a surface that is consistent.

This is what I've done so far. I transplanted 3 dwarf spruces on the side for privacy and added a brandywine crabapple in the front for eventual shade.
I plan on adding flowers and shrubs to compliment the tree.

I think that looks like a great start! I love the outdoor dining area, and the umbrella you've used for shade.

Hostas have always been a favorite of mine. Perhaps plant some along with some colorful flowers. They'll bloom beautifully and add some great life to the patio.

Looks really good! I think running the bricks all around the dirt areas would also look nice. Keep up the good work.

Its going to be a long time before the spruces offer you any privacy.

Mix in a little perennial color, or a few small seasonal color beds. Looks good though.
