getting rid of maple trees growing all over??

What's the best way to get rid of maple trees that keep sproutuing up all over our yard? we can usually pull them up if we catch them early enough, but we have a number of them that are too big to simply pull out. one of the areas we want to lay down a patio and i'm concerned that these will grow back and push up the patio. CAN THEY BE SPRAYED WITH SOMETHING TO KILL THE ROOTS AND ALL?

THANK FOR THE HELP.
Scott

what type of maple??? If there is a larger more mature Norway Maple tree nearby you will always have new saplings sprouting. If you just mow it they will come back, if you use round up on plants that small it should kill them with a good dose, but as someone said...if you're doing a proper install of a patio you should be excavating anyways
