By my pool I'm having a radius bench and backrest built. I want to put a firepit in the middle of the half moon section of floor that the bench creates. It would also be nice if this could be functional as a smoker. Could yall critique my game plan?
6" slab about 3" below adjacent flagstone paving.
30" ID mortarted stack stone fire pit.
Cast 4 bolts in the mortar joints at a low elevation. This would be for some grating for the fire. The grating would allow the ash to fall through and not smother the fire.
Another set of bolts about 16" higher for grating for the meat to sit on. This would also be the fire elevation when used as a traditional firepit.
(4) 2" diameter holes low to allow for air to feed the smoker. I see this as PVC cast into the shaft then removed after everything sets up.
Leave 1 stone loose about 6" in diameter to allow for the feeding of charcoal once the fire is lit. The startup fuel would go in from the top.
Have a steel dome fabricated for when in use as a smoker.
I read on this board where the recommendation is to not use a slab underneath the stack stone. I guess an alternative to what I suggested would be to dig a foundation as a ring about 12" in width and just do that out of quikrete. In the middle would be about a 12" sump.
Have I lost my mind?
