ohfisherman is on a distinguished road
water softener and new lawn

i am putting in a new lawn from seed and was wondering if i should bypass my water softener when i water the lawn for the first few weeks.

Your outdoor spigot should not be connected to the water softener. Normallya seperate uncondiotioned line is run for outdoor use. The high sodium content in the conditioned water would be very bad for your grass.

I agree with Hamons on using a separate line for the lawn and shrubs but if you wash your car at home the conditioned water is great.

its hooked up running through the softener. i will probably just have to bypass it when i water for the first few weeks.

Make sure you check your whole house filter sooner then. The amount of water running to water the lawn will shorten it's life pretty quick.

My old business partner was once subpoenaed to provide expert testimony on the ill-effects of softened water on lawn and gardens in a suit a client was bringing against her plumber...
