Hi,

I have a deck that's a story high (it's brick for about 8-9 feet and the deck sits on top of that) with wood beams above it and was planning on growing Trumpet Vine to add some dimension, color and more privacy. However I read that that type of vine can cause damage to structures and should not be grown near one's home. So now I'm not sure if I should still go ahead with it...

I've done some research but cannot seem to find a vine that's safe. I don't mind the maintenance but still need something that's manageable.
Would anyone know of a vine to use? Recommendations??

I live in zone 4-6 (Southwestern Michigan) near Indiana and the deck gets partial sunlight.

Sure, that vine can cause damage if you don't maintain it.

Likewise with Wisteria.

I just pruned a huge one in downtown historic Jacksonville that has a 12" diameter trunk and is swallowing-up beams.

But it was never pruned right.

I'd take the trumpet vine over most in a hearbeat. We had one at home when I was a child, and it stayed there till I was in college.

Never was problem, anchored with ties to the tool shed.

If you prune it once per year, that would be an awesome choice.
