New Lawn- To Straw or Not to Straw

I've just graded and tilled and fertilized my yard (starting from scratch) and am ready to spread seed and water thoroughly. I've seen people lay down straw on top of the seed and want to know if this is a must-have or a nice-to-have or if it's not applicable for me. I'm in the northeast (Bergen County, NJ) and the area gets direct sun for about 3/4 of the day.

I've also seen some green colored "organic" cover which supposedly breaks down more quickly than straw. If cover is definitely needed, is this a reasonable substitute?
