Hi, I'm trying to identify a plant that is growing in my vegetable garden. There are several of these "flowers". I scanned the bloom on top of the leaf, but the leaf is from a smaller plant because I had only two blooms. THe blooms are coming right off the stem at the leaf. There are no blooms on the top of the plant. The streaks on the leaf are from my strewing lime in the garden to deter the little animals that were munching there. The bloom has a little "tongue" sticking out of it - looks like a nodule or bump in the picture. Anyhow, thanks for any help you can offer in the identification.

Kind of hard to tell from the scan...

What's best for an id is a pic of the plant itself as well as a closeup of a stem with leaves/flowers. A lot of plant identification is whether leaves are opposite or alternate, how they are arrainged on the stem, etc. Also, tell us a little about how big the plant itself gets & maybe a shot of the leaf next to a ruler.

I'm not the best at ID, but not too shabby, either. Maybe someone else will get it before you do those things, but if not, get those pics posted & we'll give it our best shot.

Also, you may try taking a cutting to your local ag. extension office or better nursery in the area. Might save you time...

Jesse, New pictures were taken this morning, but the blooms had fallen off. I posted a picture of the plant with new buds formin and have two more of the whole plant, but can't post but one at a time, it appears. Thanks for looking and advice.

Looks like a foxglove (digitalis) to me. Is the leaf somewhat 'furry' looking? If yes, probably foxglove.

I don't have a guess, althought I don't think it is either a Penstemon or Digitalis. You might try GardenWeb.

Thanks, Botanybob, You are right - I posted on gardenweb and someone identified the plant. I forgot that I had this thread going - I posted another one to add another picture. The plant is sesame - I had gotten some seeds to sprout and thrown them in the garden and sesame was included. Anyhow, thank you for answering and your helpful hint.
