Flag Disposal?
We recently cut down an old metal flagpole from a client's property with a mildewy nylon U.S. flag still attached. What is the proper protocol for disposing of it?
Thanks for any guidance.

Veterans groups, such as your local VFW Post, usually have flag burning ceremonies (the good kind!) periodically. Give them a call.

If you have an Ace Hardware anywhere nearby, they'll take it to be properly disposed of as well.

US Flag Code. TITLE 4 > CHAPTER 1 > Sec. 8(k). It states:
"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning"
In Canada the same rule of etiquette applies.

Sometimes Boy Scout troops will also provide the same disposal service.
A local troop here has a collection box at a grocery store.

I had the same thought but it is badly stained with mildew on the stars and white stripes, and washing it made no difference. Seems disrespectful to fly it in that condition.

I agree Voodoo. It tears me up to see flags tattered and torn flying. The VFW is a great way to dispose of them.

I walked into the local VFW with an old flag a couple years back. Before I could speak one of the men said, "We'll take care of that." I was humbled being in a place with such great men.

You can also contact your local Boy Scout or cub scout troop - they can conduct a ceremony and the boys can get credit toward their merit badges.
