We recently cut down an old metal flagpole from a client's property with a mildewy nylon U.S. flag still attached. What is the proper protocol for disposing of it?
US Flag Code. TITLE 4 > CHAPTER 1 > Sec. 8(k). It states:
"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning"
In Canada the same rule of etiquette applies.

I had the same thought but it is badly stained with mildew on the stars and white stripes, and washing it made no difference. Seems disrespectful to fly it in that condition.
I walked into the local VFW with an old flag a couple years back. Before I could speak one of the men said, "We'll take care of that." I was humbled being in a place with such great men.
