Paver patio / paver driveway ?

The garage is behind the house over to the side. There is a huge uncontrolled flower bed there now which serves no purpose. The plan is to dig it out and put in a paver patio.

I would like to extend it over next to the garage where the space is currently occupied by grass, this will allow space for 1 car when there are a lot of cars in the driveway.

Should there be different steps taken in the area where the car will be parked vs. the area which will only be occupied by a patio table & a grill such as deeper excavation etc? I tried searching around and it seems sometimes you would pour a concrete slab and put the pavers on top of that? I guess at that point the question becomes whether or not to pour concrete underneath the whole thing?

since we do all of our work over concrete slabs we would any area with vehicular traffic 6" thick and everything else 4" thick. On base probably close to what 4seasons said 12" and 6"

1/2" of sand to level since the concrete is close but not perfect because we don't from it out.

OK. 12" vs. 6" works.

Would you guys say that a concrete base is required or is it possible to do it w/o it?

12" is minimum depth for a drive. It all boils down to what type of soil you have. Yes its possible to do w/o concrete, its done every day...
Make sure your compactor is adequate for the job. I would rent a ride on for a drive.

Well ... it snowed today, this is officially a spring project haha!

The bathroom floor, sink & toilet is calling my name already!

Thanks for the advice, I'll revive this thread in March 2010.
