Pavers over concrete

Has anyone ever done this before? I have heard of people doing it without problems, but have never done it myself. I have a customer who wants them overlaid on her front walk and steps. The concrete is in good condition, but does slope to one side. Do i need to make the walk level then use something like PL to adhere them to the concrete, or just use a bed of mortar?

Thanks

Actually we just did this about a month ago over an existing concrete patio. Luckily the patio was already pitching the way we wanted it and we could just lay right over top of it. We didn't use anything to adhere the pavers, there was a corner of the house that most of the pavers butted up to and we ran it out from there, and off of the patio we did a walkway and a little chapel stone wall. Laying pavers over the existing concrete definitely made the job go a lot faster.
But anyways, i would think you'd have no problem just laying them dry over the concrete unless the pitch is to great, or other concerns you may have.

Pl400 works great! we do this all the time. dont use the "pl landscape adhesive" use just straigh pl400 in large tubes.. glue and lay! just use some polymeric sand to sweep into the joints for looks if they prefer. But i have done this many times and the outcome has been just fine. No call backs!! have a look at some of my pic in my website and you will see the work~

Good Luck!

I was under the impression that the guys that do the pavers over concrete just screed an inch of sand and lay the pavers on top of that and only glue/mortar the edges?

The walkway is currently sloped to the side so is there a way i can level it, then lay pavers over top? i have thought about leveling it with concrete or mortar, but will that bond to the existing concrete? Thanks for the help!

There is a product available that is used to level concrete floors or repair badly pitted concrete- it's a self-leveling concrete/poly product and generally comes premixed. Your local home improvement store would carry it. Perhaps you could set a form along the off side and apply it to level the walk?

I've never tried it, but know it is out there.

There is also a bonding agent you can use, the name escapes me. Make sure the existing concrete is clean, then paint on this agent, it's pink and looks like Pepto-Bismal and then use the mortar to level. There's some kind of reaction between the bonding agent and cement that is like super glue. A good mason supply should be able to get it for you.

We do 95% of our work over concrete slabs. Then we use a half inch of sand or so to level it off. We've been doing it this way for a long time and no problems as of yet.

However going over an old walkway would make me nervous, who knows how that was built.

I've seen this done many times with no issues. Personally have laid stone over an exisiting concrete walk way. Took a while, labor of love....12 years later still looks nice.

Depending on how much your slope is that you are talking about. If its under an inch, I would use a fortified thinset mortar base under the brick and pl the rest. To make up the difference in height on the low end use a screeding sand. Its a no brainer. Now if the slope is much more than that I would look at other methods. Any pictures?

we put ALL of our pavers on a new concrete base...using an existing concrete base is tricky...usually the heights of existing concrete do not allow you to just place pavers on top without causing a trip hazard or funny sized steps, etc.....we pour a 4" finished concrete base and then lay pavers on top the next day..no sand inbetween..concrete is poured at desired pitches and set however many inces lower to allow for the hight of the paver...PL on edges..works 1000% have been doing it for years..100000's of sq ft. NO complaints or issues...

We use a 3 1/8" paver along the perimter and secure it to the concrete with adhesive. We then use a fabric to cover the concrete, screed 3/4" sand and lay the 2 3/8" pavers.
