Gas Fire-Pit on Wood Deck

Here's the situation. This couple has a lake house with a nice deck facing the lake. But only has 4' from the deck to the seawall. There's a small area to one side of the deck, maybe 7x12, but thats where they store the boat dock in the winter.

She really wants a fire pit down by the lake. But she doesn't have room for a permanent one, so she has been toting this rusty tin portable pit to the front and burning twigs for two years. He could care less.
I'm really not even there to deal with this now, just doing other things and it came up.

So would an option be to put in a gas fire-pit on the deck? What would you use to build the ring, wall block?

papercutter will become famous soon enough
One of my clients used steel 2x4s and concrete board to make an octagonal fire "pit", then veneered it with lick and stick stone and put a gas ring inside it. He hasn't burned down his house yet, but I don't think I'll ever get on board with the idea of a fire feature on a wood deck.
