Rip rap on a slope

Have a front yard slope, nearly vertical. Homeowner wanted to put mulch on it. As we all know, that won't last long enough for the check to clear the bank with any wind or rain at all. He wants other options. CHEAP other options. (My fantasy life includes homeowners who actually have money.)

I can price out ground covers, that is my area. But riprap might be a viable option here, I have pricing on the material, but I don't have any idea how long it would take to install. The area in question is 65 ft long, 8 ft wide. Rip rap can be delivered to the street which is 10 ft away, so it's not like we have to wheelbarrow the stuff to the site.

What is involved with this? And I'm not doing the work, I'm simply giving him a rough idea of what it would cost for different options.

What's involved in placing rip rap? A machine with a bucket and a person to run it. Scoop, dump, backblade. Scoop, dump, backblade. You could put a geotextile beneath it if you wanted.

Thanks Jeff. I was totally out of my realm, thinking it could be done by manual labor then.

You could, if the stone was small enough. But it'd be far faster by machine.

The material I was pricing out claims to be 'granite rip rap 6"-15" diameter'.

Maybe plant it thickly with ornamental grasses...lots cheaper than ground covers and no weeds.

Cheapest route I know of is vinca minor. .32cents per plug. It would spread, hold the dirt, stay evergreen so they don't have mud in the winter. However, they have informed me they have absolutely no intention of ever watering and I don't care what it is, anything with roots needs supplimental water to get established in this climate. Thankfully all I'm doing on this job is the design. And THAT I got paid for.

I have GOT to start advertising somewhere for people who actually are willing to spend the money it takes to get the result they want.
