Just from my experience playing the game, and these are just sugggestions, :
* Grass, although I would probably want a variety like Bermuda, Zoysia so I could keep it cut lower. I have played on regular old backyard grass ( fescue ).
Being in Jersey, I'm not sure what type you would use. Especially if you wanted a more formal look.
* Synthetic grass - Make it like a synthetic putting green. Down here, we construct the base just like a paver patio, making sure we have some good 1" - 1.5" gravel as the first base. Add some slightly taller fringe material and VOILA!!! No mowing. Slopes , borders, berms could be created. Most companies around here are charging around $14 / sq. ft. for total install.
My last selection might not work. Most of the time I play on the beach so you would have to get good , fine beach sand and keep it wet, just like the beach. The hard packed sand is an awesome court for playing. But... like I said, this idea was not meant to be taken seriously.
It all depends on what the finished look will be that you're trying to achieve.
Maybe someone has another idea.
