Sealing House Brick Before Building Ret Wall

I've got a project coming up where we'll be building a retaining wall on the side of a house (wall running perpendicular to the house). The backfill/topsoil for the wall will be partially covering the house brick @ the foundation. In the past, we've applied waterproof tar to any house brick, then filter fabric between that and soil anywhere soil must touch brick. Anyone else doing this, and do you tend to sandblast or otherwise prepare the brick surface for waterproofing? thx.

Jim

I usually waterproof brick and stucco with a roofing sealer, some are clear and some are black. I believe not doing so is asking for exceesive moisture to permeate the surface and break them down. Not saying wrong or right, just what I do.

I've done the same as said above........also done a sealant paint.......white color

No issues I know of from doing either method........and found the sealant paint much, much easier and quicker to move along with the project

Glan,
Are you referring to a product such as Thoroseal? If not, what do you use?
Thanks!
