You should all check out Advanced Pavement Technology | Ecological Paver Systems Chicago for info about permeable pavers. Lots of advantages over pervious concrete. Asphalt also has a pervious system but I can't imagine it could possibly work. The photo's of the permapave makes me agree with Glan: looks like they explode with the first freeze.

Finally got to see a permapave paver...it looks like a giant rice crispy bar....the aggregate is held together with some sort of "glue"....looks pretty weird but when I held it under the water the water ran thru like gangbusters....Not sure of what the pavers have to sit on to actually work but it was pretty amazing....

site is an unknown quantity at this point
This week we installed the plants on a commercial job where they installed permeable asphalt on the whole parking lot area. It looks like a good product to me. I'm going to have to watch to see how they deal with snow. The base is a complex parfait of many layers of clear crushed stone of different dimensions FIVE FEET DEEP. We were not allowed to spill any soil on it....none....at all. If we did we needed to vaccuum it up. This added considerable time to our planting work. I am planning to ask if it is specified in all future commercial plans in order to cover my behind. One other cool thing- every square foot of that parikng lot is equal to a square foot of detention pond in the eyes of the planning board.
