Installing Paver Driveway with GAPS between the pavers...

I have a VERY good client that has been giving me very profitable jobs now for the past several years. He's asked me to install a driveway using Acker pavers (6x9 and 6x6 non tumbled) with a catch. The driveway will actually be 2-2ft. beads of pavers and he wants 1-2" gaps between each paver so as to allow for grass to grow up in between. Has anyone done this? Any suggestions? Thanks.

There are some manufacturers out there that provide pics of patterns you can use to provide 2"x2" gaps between the pavers. Great for collecting storm water, appears relatively simple to do. You could also probably figure out similar patterns yourself (for example, think of laying hollandstone in stacked "T"s - this would give you that kind of gap).

Thank you for the info sullo-design. I looked into the Pave Tech "Enviropave" paving spacers that they distrubute. They are manufactured in Germany and it would be a special order. I have not ruled that out at this point. I'm wondering, why not just use something along the lines of a 1/2" pvc coupler for the spacing? My biggest concern is going to be the driveway's strength. I may backfill the gaps with the earth that's being excavated from the site instead of crushed granite or sand. Maybe a combination of crushed granite and earth may be the choice. The driveway is 200ft. long and he wants 2-3ft. wide "beads" for vehicle tires to travel upon, each with a minimum of 1" gaps between pavers. My foreman suggested "forming" each bead with 2x4's as if we were pouring concrete, setting the pavers inbetween these over the sub-base and gapped correctly, then backfilling with a combo granite/earth mixture. My problem with that is removing the forms without compromising the pattern once grouted. A concrete footer under each edge may be the answer? Any comments and/or suggestions appreciated.

Does your client know about permeable paving products?
