Horizontal Fencing

Doeas anyone have a specification for the new contemporary style of fencing that has come out in recent years...its horizontal hardwood slats with a space the same size as the slats themselves...think it has to be contructed bespoke, but not sure what timber to use.

Like this pic but horizontal instead of vertical...

I have seen a similar fence. It was custom made of redwood. The builder used 4"x4" redwood posts with rounded edges, spaced 8 feet on center, which I believe is standard here in the states. On either side of the post, were 1"x1 1/2" strips attached vertically. I believe he used 1"x1" strips, cut from 1"x8" or 1"x10" stock for the horizontals, spaced evenly as you said. If you plan on staining it, stick with a close, even grained wood for continuity. If painting, it's up to you. I have also seen applications horizontally where wooden siding was used on an angle, creating a louvered look. Both provide a modern and crisp look.

I've seen some really nice horizontal fences around here. They seem to all be constructed using redwood. 1" x 4" or 1" x 6" boards with 4" x 4" posts seem to be popular, though they don't tend to space them a distance equal to their width. The spacing of the posts will depend on local building codes.

I would have the posts closer together for horizontal fencing than 8 ft if the fence fill is as thin as that. I would expect 1x1 to warp quickly if only supported every 8 feet. look at trellis construction to see my point, the verticle supports are rarely more than a meter apart.
