I have seen a similar fence. It was custom made of redwood. The builder used 4"x4" redwood posts with rounded edges, spaced 8 feet on center, which I believe is standard here in the states. On either side of the post, were 1"x1 1/2" strips attached vertically. I believe he used 1"x1" strips, cut from 1"x8" or 1"x10" stock for the horizontals, spaced evenly as you said. If you plan on staining it, stick with a close, even grained wood for continuity. If painting, it's up to you. I have also seen applications horizontally where wooden siding was used on an angle, creating a louvered look. Both provide a modern and crisp look.
