Sort of a silly question.

I have an applicaiton for laying brick pavers. The existing ground slopes some...we will need to raise the grade to meet up with a new staircase that connects porch to ground level.

Is it possible to lay an efficient base and pavers when part of the install will be above the current ground level? We will need to install a mortared low retainer at one end to brring to level.

Does this work? I have almost always relied upon digging down to lay base material and pavers.....

As long as you support the sides of your base with either a retainer of some sort or packed top soil it will act the same as a submerged base. It will be more vulnerable to erosion so you must take steps to prevent this.

What would be one of the better ways to prevent erosion? Would it be by the material used for the parameter?

Use Geotextile to wrap the whole aggregate base and also at the borders you can use geogrid.

When I am faced with this situation, I just back the base up with the excavated soil and blend it in to the existing grade. I tamp the soil in place and just leave the top 2" loose for grass growth. Once the roots are in you've got it licked.
