Veneer Mix

Im veneering an existing patio of brick and concrete. Will S-type mortar mix be strong enough to hold the 1-1/2" flagstone on? Should I use some kind of Portland mixture?

That's what we use and make the mixture a little stronger than what we would use to join block or brick.
Another product that we have used in called StoneHold and seemed to work real well with synthetic stone, have yet to try it on natural stone.

Metal lath on a horizontal surface? Nope.

Re: the veneer over brick - were these brick mortared to a slab to begin with? If not, you really shouldn't mortar anything over the top of them, as it will shift and crack into many, many pieces.

You might want to mix in some dry-block for this at-grade work. Makes the mortar withstand water a bit better.

Oh! I wasn't sure of your exact application but I was talking about a vertical veneering on a block or concrete wall.
I don't believe I've ever laid flagstone over brick which is over concrete.

Good Luck and keep us updated.

the veneer went great, especially when I switched to S-type mortar mix, from the regular Quikrete stuff. One problem...while grouting the joints, I stained the stone and some of the joints look real bad...I heard I can use acid to clean the stones. What kind should I use? Also, what can I do to smooth and fine-finish my shabby mortar-joints?

If the joints are already dry, then you're stuck with what you have, short of breaking out the joints and re-pointing them. As for the stains, you can try scrubbing first; if that doesn't work, use a diluted muriatic acid. It can be found at any hardware store.

An angle grinder with a cup/blade made for masonry works pretty well.

Maybe - and you'd wreck the saw.
