In addition to some travertine pavers around the pool, my client has expressed an interest for travertine as shown below with either grass or a hardy moss, etc.. between the pavers.

My question is this: What would be the best installation?

I'm pondering dry set, like the pool deck, but need enough depth and width of good soil between them for anything to grow. I really don't want these to be wobbly since traffic will be on this area almost immediately.

My gut tells me to form these 16" x 8" boxes, pour concrete, thinset the travertine & have the full width between them to do any type of planting I desire. Basically a 22' x 22' area so I know it would be labor intensive but would probably hold up the best over the years.

I think I like your idea best. My other though would be dry set, atop a sand bedding course that would also serve as a planting medium for some creeping thyme, which seems to prefer sandy soils.

I think I'm going to quote the concrete method since I really can't picture an easy way to solidify every paver once I start planting in between them. Plus, with the new planting comes regular irrigating and I feel that these pavers will be susceptible to being twisted, kicked out of line & moved out of level once the parties start!!
