Cedar Arbor With Sliding Canvas Top Cover

OK....I am having ideas for a client on a cedar arbor (NW Style).

My client wants to have a weatherproof cover on it, so that it can be used for a ping pong table location for her son to use in three seasons.

I have seen some arbors that have a rigid Lexon material across the top that is weatherproof yet is transparent enough to have sunlight come through.

As an alternative, I am envisioning one with a waterproof canvas material that runs on cable or something similar through grommets in the fabric.....you would be able to slide it to cover completely or slide it back on those cables to open the arbor to the sky.

Has anyone ever created such an animal? I am not sure I like the look of a rigid Lexon material over the top....as an alternative, the canvas fabric could coordinate with fabrics used on outdoor furnishings, etc. and would look friendlier, at least in my mind's eye.

OK folks....what's your take?

Thanks!

That sounds like a fairly large arbor if it's going to be big enough to play ping pong under. This must be more of a portico, if that's the word I'm looking for; something for people to gather underneath ?
Anyways, I always think of an arbor as an arched structure that you can walk through - is he really going to put his ping pong table smack in the middle of a walkway opening?

Regardless , cedar arbor deserves cedar shingles.

well i call them arbors.....probably similar to a grape arbor idea...and yes, it would be long enough and wide enough to place a ping ping table....versatile, so you could also put an eating table and chairs beneath it.

now to me a portico is a small roof that projects out over a stoop with an exterior door.

A roof made of an acryllic or plastic will most likely
keep you dry if installed correctly, but are noisy
in an average storm. The canvass absorbs the pitter-patter of rainfall much better.
