Excavating bucket choice

I've got a toothed general purpose dirt bucket, and a smooth edged light materials bucket for my Bobcat 553. I've always used the toothed bucket for digging out patios/walks and then switched to the smooth to fill with aggregate.

I read someone saying that a smooth edged bucket works better for them in digging as well. Does anyone else do that? Is it cleaner? to do so?

I have an excavator and only use the smooth bucket for patio/walk excavation, much cleaner. that goes for the Bobcat too.

I find a lot depends on the soil conditions. A toothed bucket gets through hard soils much better than a smooth one. What I do is use a tooth bucket to do the rough digging (if it is really hard I will break things up with the pallet forks) and then do a final cleanup and fine tuning of the excavation with a smooth bucket.

I've got smooth, toothed, and forks so I'll try to use a combination of the three this year rather than just the toothed bucket.
