I don't know where to begin with how they help. First, they help for estimating. You can go to the site quick, take a few shots, and determine exactly what that wall height will be rather than using the old "I am this tall and it looks to be about eye level' trick.
Next, they help in base digging. All string lines do is get in the way and cause lots of extra work setting up and taking down. With the laser, you can frequently and quickly check your excavations to make sure they are where they need to be, and that they are level. The money you save in over-excavating and bringing in un-necesarry can pay for the level in a few jobs.
Next, they are great at setting up the base for srw walls, and for stone base under the pavers.
Finally, they can be used to set up the pipes, and with the accu-screed system, you can make your base prep fool proof.
One of the best things about the laser is it takes out the 'trained' eye part of setting up a job and turn it into something that less trained employees can do and understand with, meaning faster learner curves for them.
