Do it yourself ice melt

I am currently building a house with a steep driveway. I think that an ice melt system is mandatory and have been researching the electronic and hydronic systems. My plumber quoted an unrealistic price for running the system and makes it more complicated than I think it has to be. Has anyone installed these systems, and do you have an recommendations or resources for someone who wants to install it themselves?
