Subbing out gas line work

Met a client today who wants a gas grill installed outside his existing paver patio. I don't want to touch that part of the job, but who do I call?

HVAC?

Plumbing?

As you can tell, I have no clue. I've got a mason on board now, so he can handle the construction - I just don't know how to approach having a gas line run from the house to the grill.

It's really not that hard. You use flexible copper pipe 3/8" most likely, a few fittings and some pipe sealant (hint don't use Teflon tape) except for that is made for Nat gas. You bury the line, come thru the wall closest to the gas meter (there should be a drop or a cap that you can replace with a fitting.

Hello,

not sure how things are out there so things may be different here as far as who is or isn't licensed.

I believe plumbers can do the work here. You can dig the trenchs for them, and then they can lay the pipe in and make all the needed connections.

Also, some of the propane companies can do the work also. They deliver tanks and set them up for you, running all the lines.

Paul is on the money. Not hard at all. Ever try to get a plumber for a small job like this-it's nothing but a headache. You do need to check the grill specs and see what size ID pipe they spec. Otherwise they may not be getting enough gas....or worse to much

Peace,

Rex

OK, I think this one is actually pretty easy.

Get the gas company to do it and have the homeowner make the call.

I have a propane tank for my oven and to avoid running out of gas in my 20 lb propane tank for my barbecue I had them come out and run a line to my barbecue. They actually installed a quick release fitting, like on an air hose, so I could take my Weber in for the winter.

The guy came out, drilled a hole in the concrete of my foundation and ran a thick walled copper pipe to the fitting. He then put a sleeve of irrigation hose around the pipe. IT WAS THAT EASY! (Though the guy made me dig the trench).

I have since installed a patio on top of the pipe (very carefully) and have not had the odor of gas yet.

Hope that helps,

John

I had one that I subbed to a heating/cooling guy. It also helps that he's a buddy. Just got done with another for him where there was an A/C unit on a patio I tore out and replaced with pavers. He ended up selling a new $2700 install out of that one.

We have installed grill gas lines before as long as there is an existing hookup like Paul spoke about. Otherwise, I give them the name of a plumber and let them deal directly with them. Here's a picture of one we ran. Originally we ran a 5/8 line, which was spec'd on the install sheet from the grill manufacture. A week later the homeowner says he's not getting the performance he should, read as he wants to run everything on high at the same time. He tells me to increase the line to 7/8. I said " hell you only have an 1" coming into your house from the street. I made him sign off on it. They cooked an 18 pound turkey on that thing.

Peace,

Rex
