I am debating the idea of installing a built-in gas grill at my parents home. We just finished installing a inground pool and the concrete should be done this week (subbed out), any ideas, I did a search and found old threads that the links to suppliers were bad now.

was toying with the idea of retaining wall block for the island, simple a grill and maybe three feet on each side. This is in the planning stages, but if I decide to move forward I need to get these ideas quickly because I may need to adjust the concrete to accomodate the grill. I would rather build this on dirt than finished concrete, or am I wrong??

Unilock has plans for an outdoor kitchen setup using Dimensional Stone.

Or, build a basic substructure using cement block and finish it with Cultured Stone.

Don't build it on dirt. Either build it on the patio or create a concrete base for it off the patio.

Not sure I understand what you are asking for. You will need some sort of a footing for the island. Are you saying you don't want a concrete patio around the island? Are you thinking crushed stone or pavers or tile or flagstone or....?

Do you have a budget in mind yet? This will help determine what to do.

If you are going to buy a top of the line viking with all the bells and whistles, I think its kind of a shame to surround it with a bunch of cheap retaining wall blocks. No pun intended here, but that's the way I see it.

Just google gas grill, and you will find a bazillian sources and ideas. Look through it for a while, and pick out the ones you like. Then you can sit down and start putting a budget together. After you get a budget, you can then start planning. If you aren't going to spend a fortune, then a SRW set up may work fine. If you want to spend more, then think about doing a mortared unit.

Also, I think you are in a warmer client, so you may want to take a look at some of the pre-fab kitchen set ups. They basically ship the whole shabang to you, grill, counter top, sink, fridge, etc....and you just set it up on a level concrete pad of some sort and are ready to cook.

Srw unit looks sort of cheesy if you ask me. Pour a separate concrete pad for your unit, take your time and block it . Then finish it with stone, either natural or synthetic. Make it look good and show it as part of your portfolio. Just do a little research on gas line placement, venting, electrical considerations and you'll be fine.
Think of it as a learning experience which may lead to another one in the future!
