Pointing Bluestone

Has anyone have advice on pointing up bluestone. The stone is 2" thick, thinset on a concrete pad. I have about 1500 sq ft to do and need an efficient way to go about it. I'm thinking of using a grout bag and zipping along but I'm a little worried about the mix and possible shrinkage. Should I fill the whole 2" at once or get it most of the way and finish it up after that sets with a dryer mix? How about the mix, I'm thinking maybe a little extra lime to soften the mix and make it more flexible.
Any advice would be great.

When we point our bluestone we use a very dry mix kinda like wet crumbled graham crackers. Doing it this way keeps from making a huge mess on the bluestone. Just throw a trowl full on top of the bluestone and move it into the joints and press into place with a pointing iron. If it gets too dry just keep a bottle around full of water and dip your pointing iron into it. Goes very fast.

We have tried the pastery bag method and it seems like it makes more of a mess and takes longer, not to mention trying to get the consistency correct.

Search here for a pointing gun - we have one and I know others here have purchased them.

If you use a bag on 1500 sqft you're going to have bloody knuckles and hands that can't hold a dinner fork by the end of the day.

The labor savings of a pointing gun will probably pay for the gun on that first project.

Can anyone recommend a particular Pointing Gun??

Ease of cleaning, operator fatigue, durabilty, and effeciency would be my main concerns.

Thanks, AdamF
